Overview

The College of Engineering, regarded premier for its production of exceptionally prepared graduates ready to perform with a broad educational background, graduates ~100 undergraduate and graduate students annually.  The college provides an academic portfolio through the disciplines of engineering to engage students in envisioning learning excellence, research exploration, and service to the nation and the global community. 

The College is programmed for excellence with the context of Booker T. Washington, the innovation of George Washington Carver and the mettle of the Tuskegee Airmen, armed with facilities, professional faculty and staff and the resources that support public/private funding as demonstrated by its Partners and Friends.  Graduate programs explore new frontiers for solutions that support global issues.  Accredited undergraduate programs have become a tradition for students to enter and complete post-secondary/graduate studies in engineering.

Heshmat Aglan, Ph.D., P.E.

Heshmat Aglan headshot Dr. Heshmat Aglan was appointed Dean of the College of Engineering (COE) at ��Ƶ. Dr. Aglan has a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of London, England and an M. Eng. and B.S. from Assist University, Egypt all in mechanical engineering, and a two-year Post-doctorial fellowship at the Department of Macromolecular Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio. Dr. Aglan has worked at ��Ƶ for 25 years strengthening teaching, research and outreach with local, national and internationally recognized research.

He is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and previously served as the Associate Dean of COE. In projects focusing on reforming engineering curriculum funded by NSF, Aglan spearheaded the development of hands-on courses for engineering students, through the design and development of modules with embedded assessment.

He has earned numerous honors and awards including a four year appointment in June 2015 by Governor Bentley of the State of Alabama to the State Board of Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Elastomers and Plastics, Sage Publishers, Inc., and Associate Director Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Education Coalition (AMSTEC).

Dr Aglan has been responsible for a large number of funded projects at the national and international levels. He has shared his cutting edge engineering research with NASA, DOD, DOE, NSF, DHS, Federal Railroad Administration, Raytheon, Nucor Steel, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and other companies. He has more than 130 refereed journal articles disseminating his research work.

He is a registered professional engineer in both Alabama and Ohio. Aglan has supervised 6 Ph.D. students, more than 40 M.S. students and more than 20 post-doctorial scholars. He has recently been granted two patents by the USPO; one deals with the invention of nanostructured thin films (9034426 Issued: May 19, 2015) and the second on the invention of a technology for in situ repairing of railroad railhead defects (9358628 issued: June 7, 2016).
